Jio Black SIM Sold from Rs.200 to 400 Per SIM: In what could considerably delay Reliance Jio’s 100 million consumer dream, Reliance Digital Express stores have blamed server failure for not issuing SIM cards for the third consecutive day today, while local brick-and-mortar shops have been selling them in black for prices ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 400 per SIM.
There were long queues outside Reliance stores at various Delhi localities but people had to return empty handed. “You said yesterday also that servers were not working. Show me how it is not working today” fumed Ankita, 26, at the store operator at Reliance Digital Xpress mini in Prem Nagar.
The operator gently asked her to come inside and showed her that the barcode generated via Jio app was not being redeemed and was showing the ‘server down’ error, flashing the “try again after sometime” sign. The situation was no different at other Delhi locations too.
“Bhai sahab, ye jo local dukaan waale hai wo to 300 rupaye me SIM de rahe hai activate karke, unka server kaise chal raha hai (These local shops are selling it for Rs 300 and getting them activated for us too. How is it that your server is not working while theirs are),” asked Gurpreet Singh, 48, a resident of Tilak Nagar.
The store operator gave a blunt reply, “Then what are you doing here? If they are selling it for Rs 300, it’ll cost you just Rs 100 per month which is very cheap considering the unlimited free calls and data you’ll get. Go and get your SIM from them.”
There were similar situations outside Reliance Digital Xpress stores at Sagarpur and Sadar Bazar, where people were standing in queues but the store doors were eventually closed citing server issue.
“This is the fourth day in a row that servers are not working. People assemble here and make queues from 8 in the morning. We are helpless. We have a target of minimum 60 SIMs per day. When the server is working, we issue around 100 to 200 connections a day. Sometimes, we even fall short of SIM cards,” said a worker at a Reliance Digital store on condition of anonymity.
A shop owner nearby alleged that Reliance stores were selling SIMs to local telecom shops and then float the excuse of SIM shortage. “They are causing problems to people for their own benefits,” he said.
ET.com tried to find out where local telecom shops were sourcing Jio SIMs from. They, however, refused to reveal their sources. “We cannot give up our business secrets,” said a Nangal Raya shopkeeper who is selling Jio SIMs for Rs 300 each.
While the server issue appeared genuine, the secret behind the easy availability of Jio SIMs at local shops remained under cloud.
